Plant of the Week: Florida Palm Trees

If you had to pick one thing to represent Florida, what do you think you would choose to symbolize our warm, sunny state? I know what first comes to mind for most people- Florida palm trees! Our tropical home in the South is decorated with numerous species of palms, many to which their names are unknown or unrecognized. Since summer is just around the corner, and hopefully most of us will be able to take a moment of serenity to sit outside with a cold glass of lemonade and truly appreciate our surroundings, it seems rather appropriate to feature our Florida palms. Just to think: people come from all over the world to steal a little time with our tropical landscape and we are fortunate enough to live among it.

Florida palms come in all shapes and sizes… It is definitely not the smallest species of palm trees, but Dwarf Windmill palms are quite petite and compact. Clients love to use them in their custom landscape designs because they are so low maintenance and have predictable growth spans, so their place and continuity in the design is pretty stable. To find out more on this palm tree, just click the Dwarf Windmill palm link.

Then there is the Queen Palm, whose presence can be the perfect touch for any landscape design. They are tall and their palm fronds have a texture that almost acts as a canopy, almost containing the design and appearing to be very “well put together”.

Our magnificent Florida palm tree, the Silver Bismark, can also have a similar effect on landscape designs. These palm trees often tower over the rest of the landscape. Their lighter hue of blue, green, and silver gives them their name. They give an edge to landscapes, since they are “not your average palm tree”.

The Triangle palm is also not as traditional as the Queen Palm or Windmill palm. The Triangle Palm is unique in the sense that its’ fronds extend upright, rather than flowing and umbrella-like. Their palm fronds have a triangular span. This characteristic adds bold character with its’ geometrical definition.
